This was back in 1988, where personal computers were still somewhat new to the general public, as well as getting slowly integrated in the California1 educational technology system. On the first day of keyboarding class, I learned that we wouldn’t be learning how to type by using a typewriter or those electronic word processor machines. Instead, we would be learning how to type using personal computers with a typing software. I can even remember the model of that personal computer that my school began using in their systems. It was the old yet innovated (back then) system known as the Apple IIGS2.

The Apple IIGS PC system was the major choice of computers for educational technology among the schools in the state of California, especially the Bay Area3. My middle school’s computer labs and the library were all equipped with Apple IIGS computers. I practiced my typing using Apple IIGS and eventually was also introduced to educational computer games4. Eventually when high school came, our core curriculum teachers5 took advantage of the brand-new Macintosh PCs with new innovative peripherals and software such as the PC projector, scanner and the HyperCard application system as part of their teaching methods. I even remembered creating our class projects using the HyperCard system, and the way the teachers presented their lessons with this innovative computer system really helped, as well as altered, the traditional study methods that we were used to back then (through textbooks and note-taking). I remember scoring really high grades from classes who took advantage of the Mac systems rather than just the traditional blackboard and overhead projector systems.

I was going to be a devoted Apple PC system disciple until my father introduced my siblings and me to Microsoft OS-powered PCs, which was a lot more affordable but a bit more complex than the Apple systems. This also helped me shaped in to being a nerdette that I am today. Windows PC at home and Apple PC in school. Best of both worlds could bring me to success. Somewhat. I even planned to own both a Windows PC-powered system and a Mac system, but what really got me stuck to the Windows PC was obviously the price. Apple products are truly expensive, even before the company launched the hot-selling iPod mp3 player series, and yet their OS were easier to learn than the complex DOS OS (eventually replaced by Windows OS in the future).

Although I’ve stated before that I’m not much of a huge Apple fan than most people who easily got in to the trend, but I do have to give my praises and credibility to two men who helped shaped innovations to our educational technology: Steve JobsSteve Wozniakthe two co-founders of Apple who started their small business in a garage that became a multi-billion dollar company. Their smarts and expertise from the back end to the front really helped changed everyday lives of the general public around the world, but because Mr. Jobs handled the front while Mr. Wozniak handled the back, everyone around the world were more familiar with Mr. Jobs and his cutting-edge methods and idealsthe face behind Apple, Inc. He had a lot of great ideas that would make our lives convenient with the latest technology, but what set him apart from others was that he made those ideas become reality. The first products Apple produced were first introduced to our schools and other learning institutes starting at the home state of California before they became widespread throughout the country and the world. Somehow for me, Mr. Jobs was one of the reasons why I have pride of being a homegrown Bay Area resident. He, Mr. Wozniak and Apple helped give the San Francisco Bay Area its own definition of greatness and helped put the entire areaespecially the area of the Bay that we now know as Silicon Valleyin to the map and became a household name.

Although Apple now became a mainstream trend because of the MacBooks, iMacs, iPhones, iPods, iPads and the iTunes, I still find Apple synonymous with our high-class educational technology system.6 I also had the opportunity to attend an open forum back in college when Mr. Jobs was one of the guest speakers, speaking about the future of our educational system, though I didn’t get a chance to speak to him in person afterwards. My father though was the luckier one. He is a finance director of our county office of education and attended various education-based conferences and some years before Mr. Jobs was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that my father had the opportunity to meet Mr. Jobs himself (he was also one of the guest speakers at those conferences). He even had Mr. Việc làm’ business card and became one of his business contacts regarding the technology used throughout our schools and universities7.

Last August, Mr. Jobs stepped down from Apple. Right then it Ôngs a sign for my family and I that the icon’s health was failing big time that the time was near for him to leave us for a better place up there somewhere. Even after he was diagnosed, he still kept going with his position and his ideals with the company and its products. His face and presence was still strong throughout the Apple Expo events that the company held year after year. Trong ngắn hạn, Mr. Việc làm, flat-out, is synonymous with Apple. Now this is what I truly call true dedication to his creations, right from the ground up at a small garage.

Two months later after he resigned, Ông. Jobs left us and now the future is uncertain for Mr. Wozniak and Apple.

Ông. Jobs and Mr. Wozniak were true-blue, homegrown Bay Area boys.8 Neither of them have college degrees that would probably disqualify them from getting solid high-paying jobs, they’ve used unconventional methods starting from nothing to big names that they were today. It gave many of us Americans9 a different outlook on how to survive and become successful in life and helped us determine that college degree or not, if you put your mind to your goals, you can accomplish anything.

Thank you for my childhood, Ông. Việc làm. Thank you for making my childhood education as cutting-edge and innovative as you can. Thank you for making the lives of everyone around the world a lot more convenient, if not just being trendy. Thank you for your simple introduction to personal computers to children back in the late years of the 20th Century starting with the Apple II computers installed in our schools. Thank you for making the Bay Area the greatest place to live in and to give California its pure economic greatness10. Thank you for the i-series of products from the iPod to the iPad. Thank you for making the lives of everyone around the world a whole lot easier with all your innovations.

Thank you and God Bless you, Ông. Việc làm. May you rest in peace.

Truthfully I didn’t find out about Jobs until this morning. I have a bad habit of getting home from work and playing ROSE online. (I do my blog updating generally from work *i’msobad*) I was literally floored by the news. There was almost NO WARNING WHATSOEVER! I totally flipped out. I did some googling and nobody seemed quite sure how it happened. :(

I remember in elementary school we had all MAC computers, and somehow the Franklin County School system was able to get ahold of a MAC contract, but I was able to use them throughout my middle-high school career.

Truthfully I have always been more of a PC person (and I generally don’t offer much positive press for the MAC industry) but I was sorry to hear about the loss. If anything Mr. Jobs was a visionary for the industry, and he will be sorely missed.

Being a local living just 30 miles north of Cupertino (Apple HQ, also Mr. Jobs’ hometown), I have the advantage of receiving all these technology/Silicon Valley-related news from the local TV/internet news first before CNN and all the major TV networks receive the news. I was watching TV, flipping the channels when the breaking news came at one of my local channels announcing Mr. Jobs’ death.

Here in the Bay Area, any technology/Silicon Valley-related news is always big news to us locals here; it was big news when we learned that Mr. Jobs was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer (ironically, same cancer that killed my cousin 4 yrs ago). When that news came out, my parents knew that Mr. Việc làm’ time will come faster than a speeding bullet. His resignation from Apple altogether back in August was a huge sign for us that he was already dying. It was the only credible reason that we could think of as his reason for resigning in the first place, it just made no sense to us for him to resign when Apple is currently in one of their highest profitability periods with the launching of the apps for the iPad and eventually the iPhone 4S the day before. And then yesterday afternoon came.

A friend of mine blogged about the iPhone 4S and somehow she figured out (or rather she just defined it) what the “4S” in the iPhone 4S stood for. Originally it was supposed to be named the iPhone 5, but rather they changed it to 4S. To her, 4S was readfor Steve”; Apple must have already known the signs that Mr. Jobs would be leaving us permanently.

Apple went through a lot as a company. When my school started using Apple IIGS computers back in the late 80s, it was also during the time that the company was on its worst years of its profitability, plus Mr. Jobs also resigned at that time due to power struggles. It wasn’t until the late 90s when Mr. Jobs returned to Apple and redesigned the company’s business model, focus and of course, their current products and reinventions (the iPod was the company’s savior) that got the company back to its feet again.

In terms of the products themselves, I’ve always had this mindset since I was a kid that the Apple systems were meant for education and in some businesses, but primarily for education, which is why I wasn’t too fond of their newer products such as the iPod, iPad, iPhone, etc. I was one of thosesnooty kidswho didn’t want anything become just a fad/trend among people around the world and not realize its advantages and potentials, just like how the IIGS and the Power PC and the Macs were for students and teachers then. It’s like it kinda disgusts me for people to own an iPod/iPhone/iPad, etc. for the sake of just having one, you know?

We’ve lost one of our ownhome boys”, but the entire world lost a legend.
